Get rid of sports addiction?!

Question:

Get rid of sports addiction?

in all seriousness here, how can I force myself to follow sports less? Like, during the French Open I spent 2-3 hours a day watching it and reading about it and discussing on rec.sport.tennis.
I go thru phases where I think I am "cured" but then before I realise it, I am back to reading the sports section first on news.google.com.

This is really chewing up my time.

Answers:

there are many ways to change habits, and seeing a therapist can sometimes offer some really good strategies for changing how you spend your time. here are some options:

1. give yourself a time-limit or set boundaries regarding how much time you spend watching or reading about sports (1 hour per day, 5 hours per week, etc) and really stick to this schedule. it might be a good idea to plan other projects to keep your mind off the focus of sports.

2. try talking to a therapist who is trained in cognitive behavioral therapy. they can give you ideas and homework assignments to help you reduce your obsessions and addictions with both this particular issue and maybe other things you might want to change in your behavior.

3. you could try getting a prescription of some anti-anxiety or anti-depressant medication from a psychiatrist. often they can help reduce obsessive thoughts and help you quit thinking about certain things so much.

hope these help!
