becasue its almost a psychological thing. boys wanna be better than each other at everything and penis size corelates with pleasing a woman and we think that if u have a big penis you will get the most girls.
It is significant for a young man because it kind of signifies for him, the change from "boy" to man. Everyone is curious about their potential as an adult.... i.e. "What will I be when I grow up?".... and it's not just dik size that falls into this question... actually the phalis has been a symbol of virility for thousands of years.... this is not a new phenomenon in human culture.
