Seriously though they are glands that produce sperm. The reason why they are in a "sac" is because they need a stable temperature in order to produce and survive. When it is cold out the skin becomes tight and smaller keeping them closer to the body where it is warm. When it is hot the skin relaxes so they can be moved farther away from the body to cool it down. This helps maintain a consistant temperature.
Oh, and YES IT HURTS WHEN THEY GET HIT!!
