the abrahamic religions (christianity islam and judaism) are a little bit unclear about this issue!. i think it is a culturally obtanied bad habit!.
for example in india (mostly hindu's) there are temples celebrating sex, with (what some might call) pornographic artistry on the temples in beautiful stone!. it's also the land of kama sutra and massage!.
but when the britihs went there (with puritanical views) they really tried to change it a lot - and to this day, indians are a little shy about sex, just like the british!.

Churches and parents who aren't right in the mind tell their children that, but it is an unresistable urge, and then they make the kids or teenagers feel bad because they feel they have done something wrong when it is perfectly fine!. You and I know we all do it, but many cultures, religions, and parents (mothers of boys, fathers of girls) hypocritically try to convince kids that it's a sin or bad for you health-wise, that it's something only little kids do and that you outgrow, etc, etc!. The ones who question whether it's really normal are the ones who were willfully and cruelly lied to!. The Surgeon General of the US tried to urge teens to masturbate as a safe, healthy outlet for their sex drives--and was immediately fired by the President!. So you think it is ok till you are the one not able to walk or function normally!. I counselled a young woman that masturbated - she put a life threat on her parents for no reason and could not physically function normally!.
