How often do vasectomies fail?!

Question:

How often do vasectomies fail?

Researched answers only please. Just wondering what the total failure rate is, not just on the guys that went back for follow-ups.

Some links or articles would help as well.

Thanks.

Answers:

"To cut to the chase, according to the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists there is 1 in 2000 chance of a pregnancy resulting from vasectomy failure - 0.05%. This figure is generally accepted as being accurate, and the figure most doctors will quote when asked for a reliability figure. This figure is based on men having been given clearance after submitting samples for analysis in order to rule out early failures and recanalization (spontaneous re-joining of the vas deferens). One study puts the rate at 1 in 4000 (0.025%) when DNA proven paternity of post-vasectomy babies was taken into account."

"Early failure rates of vasectomy are below 1%, but the effectiveness of the operation and rates of complications vary with the level of experience of the surgeon performing the operation and the surgical technique used."

"The incidence of vasectomy failure is estimated between .5% and 1% and varies with the skill and experience of the doctor and with the approach used to block the tubes. It is for this reason that testing semen samples is essential."
