Why will albuterol not be sold in the US after 2008?!

Question: The box says
This product will be available in the US until Dec 2008 in compliance with US and international law.

Is there some controversy?

It isn't the albuterol that will be discontinued but the method of delivery of the medicine (ie. MDI) Right now the inhalers are considered ozone depleting substances - they are being switch to another method of delivery (another type of inhaler) that doesn't deplete the ozone.

They had been considered essential use but now there are other options for delivery and are going to be phased out.

On the negative side, the new HFA albuteral inhaler will be more expensive (about $20)-- there will be programs to help with cost though for low income people. You should start talking with your doctor if you take this med and start to switch before Dec. 2008 as there will be a huge jump in demand at that time (you will want to have your new inhaler before then)

Wow, news to me. I hope not, I have asthma attacks occasionally and I need my inhaler.

I'm not aware of this, I use it on a daily basis at home and with most of my patients.

I use combivent an inhaler that has albuterol as well as a preventative in it. I hope this doesn't happen millions of asthma sufferers depend on this drug to help them with their breathing difficulties.

probably because they are workng on anew med that will replace it

I hadn't heard that & I hope it's not true because my fiance has COPD & that's one thing he needs daily. I have heard of no controversy surrounding Albuterol.

Is this an inhaler? I know that all inhalers are going to HFA.
