Question: my dad is completely conked out of morphine but I am just wondering if anyone knows if he can still hear me or make sense of what I am saying?

thanks

YES. Maybe not consciously, but yes, they know you are there and know you are talking.

I was in the ICU for 2.5 weeks on much heavier narcotics, kept in sedation. First, my brain processed everything that was going on. Most of it manifested in crazy drug induced dreams, but there are some things I clearly vividly remember.

Also, I have a tendancy to have bad dreams. During this time as well as with less harsh drugs like morphine, my sig other was able to calm me down by saying I love you and touching my hand.

So yes, subconsciously atleast, they know and hear.

I hope so. That's how I told my g-pa goodbye.
Just talk to him, It's nice to think he hears you....regardless if he does not.

Sometimes, yes. It fades in and out. It's really difficult to tell whether they're completely out or not. The conscious mind just sort of drifts.

If you don't want to be overheard, then don't say anything in front of him. My mom's friend had a really awful illness and had to take huge doses of morphine for a while. She heard about half of what we were saying, but she was too out of it to respond....

Yes

i believe he can still hear you though how much he understands is questionable. rule of thumb though, when in doubt, assume he understands everything you say. keep talking. carry on normal conversations, even if they are one-sided.
i am sorry about your dad. god bless.

I don't know if morphine would keep you from hearing, but it is stated that hearing is the last to go when someone is dying and that you should talk with the knowledge that they are hearing you.

With my cancer they had me on mega doses of morphine. I could hear but quite often my mind just couldn't focus and process it. Other times the wheels in my mind were the only thing that seemed to work albeit at a different speed.

When I came off the morphine and after the surgery, I remember bits and pieces here and there of what was said.
