Cystic fibrosis? Can you have cats around if you have CF?!

Question: This girl I know (my cousins girlfriend) has 4 children and is trying for a baby again.

Her middle daughter has CF and she got a cat and now the cats pregnant. Is this safe for the child?

The mother said yes but she is all about getting more money and ignores her daughters illness. So im just checking.

i think its fine, a friend of mines brother has cf and they have 3 cats and two big staffs so i wouldn't worry

check it out with a doctor - my initia reaction is es but i am not medically trained!

hmmmm.... at the end of the day it is totally the choice of the family... if you want medical advie on this, probably best to see a doctor.

I'm a 40 year old CF'er and have had cats all my life. I'm post transplant and we still have cats - I just don't clean the litter box or have anything to do with the litter box (talk about a bonus to being able to breathe!!). Other than potential allergies to cats (which can usually be controlled through allergy shots or other medications) there really aren't issues to having cats while having CF. I would recommend the CF'er avoid the litter box but that's just a precaution and not anything that I've ever had a CF doctor tell me. Should the child get scratched she needs to be sure to wash the area thoroughly and it is a good idea to also use neosporin or other topical medication to avoid infection.

While I've seen families with CF children that seem to be all about getting more money from various government and private funding, it could be the parent simply can't deal with the guilt of the child having an illness that is directly tied back to the parent. I can only hope the parent deals with it appropriately before there are too many negative effects to her daughter.

Best wishes to them.
