There is a formal scale for classifying asthma, it basically relies on the severity and frequency of the symptoms during the day and at night. Asthma feels much the same whether it is severe or less so qualitatively (wheezing, shortness of breath which is reversible with treatment), but the symptoms are much worse in more severe disease and in the worst cases it can be life threatening.
If you need to use a reliever every night and every morning (like me) you are a severe athsmatic.
I've been asthmatic most of my life, I now use an inhaler,nebulizer and advair diskus, and see a pulmonary Doctor every three months, that's severe, if you are having breathing problems of any kind it's severe, because you have to breath to live! Take care of your self and God Bless!
