Could be an allergic reaction or irritation from something--fabric softener in your pillow or pillow case, hand cream, makeup or hair product.
You can try cold compresses. Don't put an ice pack directly on your eye. If your vision is affected, if the swelling doesn't go down within a couple of hours, or the swelling increases, call your doctor or local clinic.
definately go and see your optometrist or ophthalmologist today. it could just be allergies or if you've recently gotten over the flu or a cold, it could be a viral conjunctivitis. if you wear contacts then you may have a corneal abrasion or an ulcer (does light hurt your eyes?). With the swelling and pain it could be a condition known as orbital cellulitis and needs to be treated. make sure to see an eye care professional - the docs in the box usually treat red eyes with a generic antibiotic, which 9 times out of ten doesn't work.
