Can't stop mouth-breathing at night? sore throat in the morning... help?!

Question: I have really bad allergies, so when I go to sleep my nose gets all clogged up. Then I start mouth breathing when I sleep, so when I wake up my throat is really sore.

so my question is, what can I do to prevent this?

I've used humidifiers, those nasal strips, and night time antihistamines. they don't really help. anything else?

well you have tried the usual remedies w/out success. something to try is just put some vicks vapor rub at the rim of your nassal passages. it may need applied a couple times a night if you wake up. but since you have tried similar things this may not help either, however its inexpensive and harmless effort.

it sounds like its time to investigate the root cause, but consider this: does your problem exist each and every night, and for how long has this been occuring; have you been diagnosed with any upper respiratory disorders;, when you say you have allergies you dont say "to what", or do i know that they are diagnosed allergies, as opposed to the kind that people just place on themselves because they think they are allergic to such and such. to actually treat your problem you need answers to at least some of those questions. in the end my guess is that you will get little relief without more professional intervention. you may have some sort of nasal passage obstruction or deviation which would need to be ruled out through visual inspection of your passages. once that is ruled out, allergy investigation should take place. when you have been definitively diagnosed with allergy to specific allergens then you can begin to change your environmental factors based on the objective data of known allergens.

breathing through ones mouth will cause the symptoms you state, and chronic mouth breathing can lead to some other types of issues. keep the humidifier. you need any additional moisture to your air even it you dont notice actual relief.

i am surprised that you dont get some relief from antihistamines but then if you are only using over the counter type that could be the reason. in fact you could actually be overusing them. prescriptive doses may be in order, or a more specific type of antihistamine may be needed. that of course would be part of an primary allergy visit.

that happens to me too, srry for no good news but you just have to deal with it.

I'd get a chest exray to be sure its clear at your docs. Your where I started when I found out I had scarcoidosis. If your not taking allegeria at night and sleeping in a dust free, with at least a allergan cover over your pillow, that could help. I'd use the nasal tea pot thingy also before bed, clears your passages. I used to keep my favorite lozanges by my bed and some juice. But if there is a draft by your bed that can cause this, a window or something put weather striping on it.

that happen to me too.
