Doctors/pharmacists only:Interactions between Dilantin and Azithromycin?!

Question: I have epilepsy, and recently I was diagnosed w/ bronchitis...

Problem:my doc put me on a week-long course of Azithromycin, and it caused my Dilantin level to drop to near-deadly levels!

Does Azithromycin cause an counter-reaction w/ Dilantin?

I ended up in the hosptial because of this, but don't worry...I'm OK now!

Please answer soon, my doc's appointment is next week!

Thanks!

There is no documented drug-drug interaction btwn Dilantin (phenytoin) and Zithromax (azithromycin). The levels dropping were probably due to other factors. I would discuss that with your doctor, as the addition of azithromycin would not alter dilantin blood levels.

it can cause the level of dilantin to be higher than normal in your blood - if they were not perscribed by the same doctor you may want to call and ask - the level should not get too high for you - but double check to be sure as i do not know what other meds you are on-

I'm neither a pharmacist nor a doctor, but let's just assume that you've been on Dilantin for a very long time(at least more than 20, maybe almost 30 years)...you should get a 2nd opinion, for sure!...or maybe a 3rd!

I've looked up both Dilantin and Azithromycin on Wikipedia and(like that pharacist who answered) could find NO link between those two medications...have you tried WebMD?

All I can say is "Good Luck!" in finding out the truth about your situation...
