Can someone explain ho proofs with alcohol work?!


Question: i was also talking to someone who told me that some weird common houshold stuff has alot of alcohol. like vanillla extract, why would that have alcohol in that? and mouth wash too, isnt that bad if you drink it? wont it make you puke?

Something that is 80 proof is 40% alcohol. Many common household products like mouthwash do contain alcohol in fairly high concentration. I don't recommend drinking them.

The British first coined the word proof.

In the 1700's only the strongest Brandy spirits were taxed. The test, the "proof ", that it was strong enough was to pour a sample amount onto gunpowder, and the gunpowder would ignite.

Spirits too weak, too much water, and the powder wouldn't burn.

This is the same method British sailors tested, proved, that their hourly ration of rum was not tampered with (hourly ha ha).

The proven solution was said to be 100 degrees proof. Later, scientific methods established more exact degrees of proof using the Clarke hydrometer.
