I have had herpes for just over a year, it's confusing all the different answers for pain management there are out there, but the biggest help I have found was first aid pain spray. Just use it how you would use it on any other part of your body. The biggest chore was going to the restroom. I used a sort of spray bottle with warm water in it. It made a big difference. Rubbing Alcohol doesn't help, just will cause unnecessary pain. Feel free to email if you have any other questions.

I've often wondered if some topical anesthetic like Anbesol (sp?) would work on genital herpes. It's worth a try, right?

Antiseptic cream with a numbing agent its awesome...useing it while i type. Plus zinc is great and i also use alcohol to dry blisters up. Salt baths I do as well...Also you can call doc surgery and request a script and if they won't help explain your situation... Hope this helps

Try baking soda, it dries the sore out which helps it heal faster and it also helps with the itch. Here are some others you might try:

Cornstarch. This also can help dry out the sores and help alleviate itching. Use a cotton ball that's been dipped in cornstarch and dust it onto the sores.

Food. Eat well to boost your immune system.

Peppermint Tea. A nice cup of peppermint tea may help reduce pain and fever.

Tea. Place a cold wet tea bag right on the sores. Tannic acid can soothe genital tissues. Throw away the tea bag afterward.

Home Remedies from the Freezer

Ice. To reduce pain and itching, apply ice to the sores. Fill a plastic bag with crushed ice or use a bag of frozen peas. Wrap the bag in material the thickness of a sheet. Apply for 10 or 15 minutes, and repeat several times a day. Be careful about the time because prolonged exposure to ice can cause tissue damage.

Home Remedies from the Refrigerator

Milk. For pain relief and to promote healing, soak cotton balls in milk and apply to the area.

Hope this helps!

Tylenol will take the edge off the pain, as will ice. Avoid cortisone creams, which can aggravate symptons. Also, you may want to take some L-Lysine, an amino acid found in the vitamin section, and try to avoid nuts, chocolate and caffeine, which are high in L-Arginine. High levels of arginine with lower levels of lysine make a favorable environment for the virus to thrive.

Hang in there, once you get on the medication you'll be able to make the pain go away much faster. Hopefully the pain you're having now will go away long before you can get to the dr.

EMLA, hands down. It is a topical numbing agent usually used by diabetics for home insulin injections. It is a touch expensive but soooo worth it while you are waiting for medication. It's over the counter, but you usually have to ask for it. A little tiny bit goes a long way, too.

Depending where you live, you may also want to try going to a planned parenthood and asking if they have any samples of acyclovir. Tell them you have no insurance and need it to be anonymous.

I'd also recommend wearing loose-fitting underwear and a skirt or pants with plenty of room in the crotch.

Nothing "wet" because that would keep them from drying out & scabbing up (& going AWAY!)
I use a little Abreva for the 1st day....but then have to stop to allow it to scab up

hydrogen peroxide helps healing & drying
Rubbing alcohol (if you can deal with the initial BURN)
A bath with salt - just regular table salt (or jump in the ocean!)
There's not really much you can do for PAIN...except ibuprophen
