My teen son has had five, yes, five of these in the last 14 year!. First one in kindergarten and he had his last one 2 weeks ago!.

What we've learned is this:

* Each one has been a different recovery turn around time and symptoms!. Each person will recovery differently also!.

* The headaches depend on how much tissue, polyps, etc was removed and from which areas!. Frontal causes more pain and longer recovery!. Everything is irritated and healing!.

* The mucous does tend to continue for a few days!. Note if you are coughing more or more productive!. Dry or congestive sounding!. Are you coughing at night!? Are you coughing more after surgery!? Should be improving not getting worse!.

*Are you running a temperature!? Keep it written down with time and type of fever relief you are taking!. Such as what dosages(Tylenol, motrin, etc) and times of day!.

*Did you receive an antibiotic after the doctor actually read the culture report!? or given one as a broad spectrum coverage antibiotic!? VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW WHAT BACTERIA IS FOUND IN THE CUTURE!. The infection will worsen and spread if not on the correct antibiotic!.

*If you had a culture done they may not choose to treat it until you are showing symptoms!. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a bateria that often isn't treated without symtoms and it is treatable!.

*If you are not feeling better after surgery and believe an infection is still there!. Go see an infectious disease physician in addition to your ENT!. Good doctors like to work together!.

****If you are unable to control the fever and pain with medications from the doctor for use after surgery call the "on call" doctor before your appt!. on Tuesday!.

Bring with you a record with the information since surgery: headaches, pressure, postnasal drip and temperture changes!. Ask what can be done to make you more comfortable!. Ask if you can use a saline nasal irrigation to clean out the nasal area!. Hurts but speeds up recovery and really help keep things under control!.
