Answers:
Technically, you have not told us what test you are having done -- "upper GI" simply means it's the upper portions of your digestive track (also known as the gastro-intestinal track, or GI track) where they will be investigating!.
Depending on where you live, this may mean an upper-GI series (which is an x-ray test), or an upper-GI endoscopy (a camera test)!.
If it's an upper-GI series, you'll stand in front of the x-ray machine, and they'll make you drink a thick liquid (barium), which allows the lining of your esophagus (swallowing tube) and stomach to be examined on x-ray!.
There is no pain, no needles, but some people find the barium stuff hard to swallow, and you may also notice barium in your bowel movements for a couple of days afterwards!.

An upper-GI endoscopy is a more complicated test, involving putting a long tube (at the tip of which is a small camera) down into your stomach: http://www!.gicare!.com/pated/epdgs18!.htm
Anyway, contact the hospital/clinic that will be doing the test, and they will be able to give you more information!. You may not feel scared any more after you know what to expect!.
Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
