From everything that I've read, there is no direct link between hemochromatosis and low platelet counts; just not enough data to support a conclusion!.
However, I do find it interesting that your brother also suffers from the same symptoms; it could be something genetic that runs in the family!.
ITP or ideopathicthrombocytopenia purpura is a condition where the total platelet count is low, but there is no cause to be found!.
The other things your physician might check is your liver, spleen and bone marrow; to make sure all those organs are healthy!. Any or all of them can have a direct impact on the platelet count!. Good luck!
