I live in Mozambique for eight years and stopped counting how many times I had malaria. Just want to share my first-hand experience with you.
The symptoms usually start 14 days after being infected. For some reason malaria sometimes shows up after we travel to an area with a different altitude. It almost always start with flu-like symptoms and a sore throat. These intitial symptoms can last between two days or even up to a week. Some people also get stomach cramps or headaches. You start feeling very tired and sleepy. As I can not take preventative medication permanently, I always wait until the cold fevers strike, that is a dead give-away. Like flu, you also have sore muscles and pain in your legs and back, usually that happens when the malaria parasites are being released from the liver, and at a six or twelve-hour interval. You have no apetite, and loss of taste.
There is a wide variety of effective medication you can take. The important thing is to act quickly, as the situation can worsten considerably within a day. As soon as you get the chills, you should definately get tested asap. Although malaria can show negative, you should insist on more tests every six hours, and insist on getting the medication from your doctor or pharmacy. (Here in Africa you can buy over-the-counter medicine.) Although the unneccassary taking of malaria medicine can definately be damaging to your liver, even here I have seen too many cases where doctors wasted time with unneccassary testing and lack of experience, especially if they are not in a malaria-area. PLEASE do not run and get the medicine when you suspect you have malaria, but by the time you are getting a high fever, rather make sure you get your hands on the right medication asap.
After taking the medicine, you should start feeling better within 3 days. You are also advised to eat, although you dont feel like it. It helps with the absorption of the medicine.
Within days your friend will definately be certain if he or she has malaria, but please do take him/her to the doctor.
