Fibromyalgia?!

Question:

Fibromyalgia?

I would like some more opinions on the condition known as Fibromyalgia.

I was diagnosed with severe Fibromyalgia by a Rheumatologist many years ago.
I have a problem with this, as I'm not sure that I agree that it's truly a condition.
I wonder if they have a group of people with similar symptoms and they don't know what causes it, so they felt they had to give it a name.

The reason I'm feeling so unsure about it is because there's really no specific testing they can do to determine it. Mine was diagnosed after eliminating pretty much everything else.
Plus there's no known treatment. Everyone is different so what works for 1 person may not work for another.

I know some doctors seem to believe in it and some don't.

What I don't like is they can not tell me why I'm in so much pain. And nothing stops the pain.

Just wanted some others professional opinion.

Answers:

I am in that nebulous do-I-or-don't-I have fibromyalgia area myself. I've been told both yes and no. For me, the label would be more of a convenience than a revelation; a word that I could use to label my pain for people who ask.

I have chronic pain. I've had it for a long time. I'm struggling to find the right combination of lifestyle, mindset, meds, supplements and, well, everything to bring myself back to a point where I can consider my condition at least managed, if not cured. I don't pretend to have the answers.

Currently I'm taking trazadone (brand name Desyrel) for sleep. It helps me some. Elavil (amitryptiline) is sometimes used. I just started taking Zoloft because I spoke to a fibro patient who unexpectedly got some pain relief after being put on it. I haven't been on it long enough to render an opinion. I also take Neurontin, a drug which is of some benefit in treating nerve pain. A similar drug, Lyrica, recently became the first drug approved for treating fibro pain.

I just started taking some supplements. I'm trying ribose because of this article. <http://www.immunesupport.com/library/sho... I'm also adding magnesium malate. And my friend, who has fibro, told me I should add potassium.

My best word of advice is this. Keep trying things. The people who do best when dealing with chronic health concerns are those who keep seeking answers. Try traditional medicine, Eastern medicine, meds, supplements, exercise, diet changes, physical therapy, talk therapy, etc. Try more than one thing at a time. There are too many options to try to go down the list methodically. Do as much as you can within your means.

And good luck. Chronic pain is a *****.
