Ulcer side effects?!

Ulcer side effects?
Last night I was in the ER becuase I was having severe rectal bleeding. When I say severe I mean it was though I was peeing blood from my colon. This has gone on for 3 days now so i went to the er where they did blood work and a cat scan. The doctor called this morning and told me I had an ulcer and is sending me for an Upper and Lower GI and additional blood tests. Is that type of bleeding common with an ulcer? Also, can you get headaches with ulcers? I know that I should be asking my doctor these questions and I will, but, in the meantime I would just like some answers from those who have dealt with it. Thanks!

my brother has had ulcer and he had to take aciphex for a long time. He had gastric ulcer but aciphex can be used for different ulcers i think.
