Question: Why Warfarin to be taken 3 tablets at once instead of one, 3 times daily!?
My wife has to take Warfarin!. Sometimes she forgets!. Why is it not recommended to take it when she remembers!?
It also seems to her (and me) that taking one tablet 3 times daily would be better than 3 tablets once daily!. But "doctor says NO" (like the bloody PC!) !. !.!. Why please!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I assume your wife has to have regular INR tests!. I think the clotting is very sensitive to the amount of warfarin intake and that is why it is recommended to spread out the doses evenly throughout the day!. If she takes all 3 tablets at once it might change the INR reading too dramatically!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
Well first it seems that if she is forgetting to take it once a day 3 times a day would be even harder!. But medically, and speaking generally as a nurse most the time Warfarin or Coumadin are taken once a day at the same time everyday!. It really comes down to the half life and making sure that your body has the right dosage at all times!. Some meds that are taken 3 times a day have a shorter half life than those that are taken once a day!. Another thing that can factor in with her have to take 3 pills at once could be the pharmacy didn't have the correct milligram needed in one pill or the manufacturer doesn't make the pill in that milligram!.

I take Warfarin 12mg each day!. I was told to take it at the same time every day!. I set my phone alarm to remind me because I am also prone to moments of forgetfulness! If your wife forgets to take her tablets, she can take them within 2 hours of that time but no later or it will interfere with her next dose the following day!. The anti-coagulation nurse will advise her when and how much to take if she does miss a day!. Taking the tablets singly will result in her blood 'levels' dropping and may cause a clot!. Warfarin works for 24 hours!.Its really important to take the dose as prescribed!. Doubling up a dose may thin the blood too much and cause bleeding, spacing the dose out may make warfarin ineffective and there would be more risk of blood clots!.
