Diabetes II in 20-year-old?!

Question:

Diabetes II in 20-year-old?

Hey - I've been looking for a diagnosis for a while, and today a family friend (a doctor) got my mom freaked out that I have type II diabetes.

I'm 20, healthy weight, and I've had gastroparesis for about five years. I drink maybe 12 cups of water a day, but I've done this for ages. We worried about diabetes when I was a kid, because I've always had sensation problems in my legs. I keep cutting them up w/o much pain. It always heals fine, though.

In blood tests my glucose level has always been fine - 80-100. Can a diabetes diagnosis hide like this? Also, can type II diabetes start off in a skinny, very active little kid?

Thanks - I appreciate any advice!

Oh, and I've been dizzy most of the time for the last few months, and I've got a very low pulse (40s). My mom is freaking out that it means the nerve damage is setting in or something.

Thanks, everyone! Good to hear :)

Irina MD - I'm on Prozac, but that's it!

Answers:

It seems very unlikely that you have diabetes 2. First all the sugar levels you quote in your message are within the normal range. Many people drink about 8-10 cups of water for health reasons and you are drinking a bit more. You also heal well another sign that you are not diabetic. It sounds more likely that you may have another medical problem but not related to diabetes at all. I was also a skinny 20 year who drank pitchers of water, extremely fatigued, did not heal well and I was diagnosed with diabetes 1..my sugar levels were over 400...diabetes 2 happens to people in their late 30's or 40's and people who are often overweight and can control it with diet. You should see your doctor and I wish you all the best. Cherie
