Question:
What are the risks associated with removing a pulyp on the vocal cord (in the throat) using Laser Surgery?
I have a pulyp on my left vocal cord and it really affects my speech. I was told they sugery can leave permanent scaring that results in voice hoarsness for life. Someone told me however that the laser surgery worked for her for something in her throat. I think it was something to do with her voice. I'd like to know what the risks are with laser surgery as opposed to conventional surgery.
Answers:
Applications of CO2 laser and cautery are often damaging to the delicate vocal fold cover. Risks of endoscopic laryngeal surgery with laser polypectomy include airway fire, thermal injury, and potentially infectious laser plume.
