What is the difference between a humidifier and a vaporizer?!

Question: What is the difference between a humidifier and a vaporizer?
I have a vaporizer and it lets out a steam from the cold water in the basin, but what is a humidifier? Would I be better off with a humidifier for the purpose of treating and preventing coughs/colds in my kids, by placing one in their bedroom at night? Or will a vaporizer do the same job?

Thanks everyone!

Answers:

I think there are three methods of getting water into the air. One by heating the water to a boil. The other atomizes the surface tension using piezoelectric transducers. And the third is a mechanical spinning centrifugal method to spin the water into the air.

The last two can put medicine into the air. Also asbestos and minerals present in the water. That is why you should use distilled water for these machines. The boiling water may use ordinary tap water.

The methods that use cold water, piezoelectric transducers and centrifugal method are called vaporizers.
