Then you have a high chance of catching it if you were exposed to someone with a strain of the flu that you never encountered before.

I have a degree and work in health care.

If it's been three days or more since he got over the flu, you probably won't catch it from him. However, it IS flu season, so you still have a pretty good chance. Just drink lots of vitamin C, wash your hands, and don't kiss, drink after, or hold hands with someone who might have it, and you should be fine.
I have never had a flu shot in my life, and I have only ever been on antibiotics once, and I have only ever gotten the Swine Flu, which I fought off without even a cough drop. The flu is only bad if you have an autoimmune disease or if you don't have access to a medical professional. Don't worry, you will be fine either way.
