Cold sores (prefer a Doctor to answer please)?!

Question: Cold sores (prefer a Doctor to answer please)?
I have read online that you can trasfer cold sores to another person's mouth or gentials through contact even when there ISN'T a visable outbreak.. However my doctor told me that they are only contagious when the cold sore is visible and actually on your mouth..

Can anyone tell me which is correct?

You are unlikely to be shedding virus unless you have visible vesicles.

GP for more years than I care to remember

A few bored ones like me is your answer to the rather rude individual that shouldn't have wasted her time answering!
The doctor is correct, the coldsore has to be visable and active and in addition you are either a coldsore sufferer or you are not. The simplest way to explain it is that you either develop a coldsore carrying gene or you don't and you will do this when you are very small. If you have made it to adulthood with no coldsores the likelyhood is that you are not a carrier and never will be.
Hope that helps.

I can help and give you information. It's true what your Doctor is saying. One thing to keep in mind is. That the other person may have a area that is starting with a white small spot / non-noticeable by others. It could be a small raised area. The other person may not know it's the start of a cold sore. This is a cold sore know as herpes. It is easily transfer to another person. It doesn't need to be a full blown cold sore/herpes. It can be the bump/spot and can last 7 to 10 days.

I go threw the same thing. My Doctor gave me a prescription for " ZOVIRAX" . Apply at onset of symptoms and repeat every 2 hours. It works like a miracle.

You can talk to your nurse or Doctor to have them order it for you. The same with the other person that is a carrier. I use it faithfully because I know it works.

I have tried other prescriptions don't work as well. I even tried the ones you can get over the counter.
This is the best but you need a prescription ordered. I have dealt with this for over 8 years.
( I work as a nurse in the office )

Good Luck
