Allergy to cats is extremely common, occurring in up to 25 percent of people with allergies. It is estimated that about 55% of the population has an allergy. So 25% of 55% is about 14%.
I think that what you do is a personal decision. If there is a history of allergies in the family it might be a good idea. However, parents often think that simply removing the cat from their home will resolve the allergy problem, but do not realize that cat dander can remain in a house from six months up to two years.
