Swimming is probably the most pleasant of the ways to get some "cardio" into your exercise routine. Running is fine as long as you don't have any health conditions and your weight is at a safe place to start with that. If it isn't, I recommend getting a good heart monitor, find out your target heart rate (here's a good website for that: http://exercise.about.com/od/cardioworko… and have at it! All this AFTER, of course, addressing any health concerns or conditions you may find. Once you are certain you just need to get fit, proceed.
You can definitely lower your heart rate and blood pressure by simply exercising 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. That can be anything from walking to playing a sport to swimming. You choose. And don't beat yourself up over missing days. Remember - any exercise is an improvement over none.
My mother lowered her BP over 50 points simply by WALKING on a treadmill 5 times a week. So the goal is get moving. You are already making a preemptive strike by becoming informed and working on your numbers before they develop into a condition you have to deal with . Go for it!

Do Cardio type workouts. Cross trainer, treadmill, stair climber, bike etc.
Do interval training, hard for 2 mins then easy for two minutes.
Aerobic heart rate is something you can do for lengthy amount of time.
Anaerobic is a lot tougher, you can only do it for a short time until you run out of breath, strength, etc.
Go online and google cardio workouts
