How to cure of sudden deafness?!
Question: How to cure of sudden deafness?
My mother has had a eardrum-related sudden deafness, and has no problem in
her head according to a brain CT scan. As her doctor said, the major cause of
her deafness is that her right eardrum is pulled inside, and it is probably
caused by middle ear infection. Her doctor, however, couldn't have provided
any absolute solution for her ears. If anybody knows any medical specialist
in that field in the world, please tell me; or if anyone knows any web-site that enable visitors to communicate with doctors, please let me know.
Thanks
Answers:
It might be worthwhile to take her to an ear/nose/throat doc (otolaryngologist). A retracted eardrum doesn't usually cause hearing loss - it usually has the opposite effect, so there must be more than just a retracted eardrum. There is an infection that causes a retracted eardrum - the situation is called a cholesteatoma, and this is probably what's going on. Hearing remains impaired until the infection is gone and for several more weeks if the eardrum ruptures. Sudafed might help unblock the ears if this is a simple retraction without an infection, but won't do much for a cholesteatoma.
