Exhale during the exertion- So when you are pushing up, exhale; when you are relaxing down, inhale. Sit ups, exhale on the way up inhale on the way down.

Breathing this way prevents you from performing the Valsalva Maneuver, which raises your blood pressure and internal pressure as well.

I know to exhale when contracting the abs in a crunch I think. Maybe it is the smae for the other?

Your lungs should be empty during the toning part of the exercise. When you go up on an ab crunch exhale. The idea of this is, that you're emptying the oxygen out of your muscles, so that when you're toning, they're at their slimmest. Hope this makes sense!

Out on your way up, in on your way down. A good way to get into a breathing pattern is to count your reps out loud on your way up.

When performing an exercise such as a push up it is best to inhale on the negative movement and exhale on the positive. The positive and negative movements refer to the contraction and relaxtion of the muscle(s) you are trying to build respectively.

For example.... In a push up. The positive movement is pushing yourself away from the ground, (because the pects are contracting).

This works for any excercise. Just keep in mind what muscle you are trying to build. You know to exhale whenever that particular muscle is contracting.

That being said it isn't as easy as it sounds. It can take some real practice to get the hang of it. Once you start exhaling effectivily you will notice that it helps. Also, don't focus too much on the breathing and let it synchrinise with your movements naturally.
