That is how many caloric units it takes to either lose or gain a pound.
It doesn't really work like that. If it did, people would be able to guarantee weight loss which they can't and don't. Weight loss depends greatly on how much a person weighs and their caloric intake. People that have a higher caloric diet and are heavier can loss a pound with not that much work. That's why people that have massive weight loss talk about how much easier it is when they are heavier to loose weight. Assuming you are a lean person, it may take more than 1000calories worth of of work to loose that pound.
