Pilates Question?!

Question:

Pilates Question?

I read over and over that you are supposed to rest for 48 hours in between strength training sessions. Should this apply to Pilates workouts as well, since it isn't much of a cardiovascular workout? My muscles always feel sore after completing a workout (I felt this after strength training at the gym too), so I was wondering if resting would be a good idea. Thanks in advance!

Answers:

The short answer is : it depends. I do Pilates apparatus once a week, and have done apparatus once a week and mat work once a week (with a few days in-between), and it was fine. My instructor does Pilates every day, and I suspect most other instructors do too. I'm sure you know that muscle soreness is a sign you've exerted yourself, so rest is essential. Perhaps try Pilates twice a week with a few days in-between and see if you feel better/different. Cardio work itself can be done 6-7 days a week, with the proper incremental workup. Muscle memory becomes an issue, but I've always downplayed the significance of that.
