Calorie requirements vary all over the place depending on size, age, sex, and activity level. Its the same as asking how many gallons per day of gasoline does the average person use. Food is fuel.
During peak training weeks, I need a minumum of 3500 calories a day. On a race day, I might need 8000-9000 just to break even. If I'm stuck inside due to work and can't get my training in, I can get by on 1500 or so.
