How does the calorie deficit work?!

Question: How does the calorie deficit work!?
these are what i think deficits are, i just don't know which one is correct, please tell me which one is correct and let me know how it works:

#1:
if my body needs about 3,000 calories a day and i only consume 2,000 calories, then my deficit for that day is 1,000 calories

or

#2
in order to create a deficit, i would need to burn off more than i consume!. ex:
i eat 2,000, i burn 2,500 calories my deficit is 500!?

i find #2 hard to do because who has the time to burn off more than what they eat!.!.

therefore i believe that #1 is right but please an expert on this tell me which is right and why!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
2 is actually a lot easier than you think!.
You burn calories simply by existing!. As a 123lb 5'4" athletic girl, I'm supposed to burn about 2000 calories just being sedentary!. So I only eat about 1400-1500 a day; my deficit is 500!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Both scenarios produce, in the purest sense, a deficit!. However, when people talk about 'calorie deficit' they mean burning off, in the space of a day, more calories then they have consumed!. It is an inadvisable thing to do as obviously your body will start burning body fat which you need, and eventually it will break down your muscles to fuel vital organs!. It is a common technique for weight loss amongst anorexics!. It will also result in you feeling exhausted *all* the time!. If you are trying to lose weight, reduce your calorie intake to no less than 1,600 a day and exercise for 30 minutes aerobic a day - although that is only advisable if you have a BMI of more than 25!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm assuming your BMR (Basic Metabolic Rate) is 3,000 calories!. This means every day your body burns 3,000 calories!.

If you exercise that day--say you run a few miles--then you add to the number!. It would then be 3,600!.

Every calorie you eat, you have to subtract!. Say you ate 3100 calories that day!.

You would be left with 500!. That is your deficit!. Do this every single day for a week and you've lost a pound!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
