Is it OK for a 13 year old to lift weights?!

Question: Is it OK for a 13 year old to lift weights!?
Well I am 13 years old, turning 14 soon!.
I have been lifting weights for over 3 months now!.
I lift 80 pounds maximum and people keep telling me to stop because I will not grow (My height is 5'3)!.
Is that true!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
You should be fine!. You will continue to grow, it's probably because they are afraid you will hurt yourself!. I'm 14, and used to very rigorous training in Tae Kwon Doe, and some weight-lifting, but bro, I'm still growing, lol!. Be careful lifting weights, have fun with it, and don't let rumors scare ya!Www@Answer-Health@Com

what those people are saying is total crap!. exercising produces HGH(Human Growth Hormone), no matter what type of workout you are doing!. keep lifting those weights, but remember to lift only the weights you are able to work with, you're goal is to train, not to strain!. so anyway, it's not true that lifting weights would stop you from growing, maybe they're just worried about an accident or something!.
there was an incident at my school where some kid was lifting weights that were too heavy for him to handle, and he ended up dropping it on his face, busting his jaw off!. he had to be lifted onto a helicopter and flewn to a nearby city up north!. ended up getting a couple hundred stitches!. doctors say if he had dropped the bar an inch lower or higher from his strike zone, he would have died!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It is absolutely ok, stunted growth from weightlifting is a complete myth!. In fact, weightlifting actually improves posture and flexibility, and of course your strength, and muscular development!.

Just make sure you don't workout the same muscle one day after another!. You can workout everyday, but workout different muscles on different days!.

For example:

Monday-Arms
Tuesday-Chest
Wednesday-Legs
Thursday-Arms
Friday-Chest
Saturday-Legs
Sunday-Arms

You should be consuming lots of protein to see the best muscle results, but don't eat more than 1 gram of protein for every pound of your weight, that may be a bit much, although many bodybuilders do eat more!.

Other than that, make sure you sleep well, for 7-8 hours, eat a healthy diet, drink lots of water (8+ cups), and if you decide to start cardio that would be fine!.

EDIT: Here is a great site to help you workout your chest, with lots of chest exercises, and how to do them properly:

No!. It's not true!. It's perfectly safe and healthy as long as you're lifting weights properly!. ALWAYS use perfect form!. If you can't, then take the weight down until you can!. I'm guessing that the 80 pound max is on the bench press!. As long as you're using the right form, you're not training more than 3-4 times per week or for more than 45minutes to an hour each time, you'll be fine!. I'm glad that you're interested in weight training!. It's a great hobby and can teach you a lot in time!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, and actually it is good for 13 year olds to lift weights because ur going through puberty, and if u work out and be active during puberty you'll grow taller rather than not working out during puberty!. Just don't lift weights that are too heavey, and don't lift weights while standing up, because it will put stress on your back, but other than that u should definetely work out, go swimming, go running, go biking, lift weights with no weight and a lot of reps, it will help u grow, since ur 13 years old and are about to go through a growth spurt, if ur not going through one alreadyWww@Answer-Health@Com

That's fine!.
Just be warned of the following:
a) Excessive weight concern can lead to other important issues such as anerexia or bulimia!.
b) Make sure you take breaks, giving your muscles time to grow!. A lot of people get caught up in the fact that if you stop lifting weights for a week or so you'll loose it all!.!. no no no!. TKAE BREAKS otherwise you'd be taking 3 steps forward and 4 steps back!.
Good luck, muscle man!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Exercise is good for you, but yes 2 & a half hours every day is far too much!! It will affect all the bones that are being loaded!.

Some of the schools here were told to reduce the amount of books that were needed for homework!. Because the weight of the books being carried home was going to do permanently damage to the kids backs

On second thoughts with what you are trying to do

YOU ARE being Stupid!. Why don't you get a life !!!
But your parents probably think its better then you being out of your head on drugs!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

lol they say it stops your growth but that not true i started lifting weights in 7th grade and now im 19 im 6'1 taller then both my parents and now I bench 315 lbs and it has help me in sports and help me stay in better shape!. so lift weights and get like me I started at 95 poundsWww@Answer-Health@Com

i never heard of that, but in my classes it said you shouldnt work out until youre at least 16, because you're growing, and your muscles are growing too, and if you work out and build muscle, you'll just lose it in a few years!.

but excercising and work outs are fine, just not weight liftingWww@Answer-Health@Com

No, and you can actually accelerate your development by the increased levels of hormones being release!.

However, keep your reps average and stay with moderate workouts, you're young and have plenty of time to develop the body you want!. There is no need to overextend yourself!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

well i hope not ive been lifting since i was like ten with my dad!. light stuff, but lifting all the same!. and im six foot at fifteen, so i doubt theres anything behind it!. ask your doctor at your next physical!. but believe me, whether youre tall or not, getting ahead with lifting now will deff help you out with the ladies later haha =]Www@Answer-Health@Com

My dad used to tell me that, and i held off till i was about your age!. if your allready going into puberty you should be ok!. Im now 5'8 and going up, if you were ment to be short you would already be short!. :)Www@Answer-Health@Com

well my coach use to tell us that no it won't stunt your growth but it will cause more strain on your muscles and that'll eventually keep you from getting stronger!. Something about your muscles not fully developed for lifting weights!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Well, you should wait til after puberty to start lifting (if you're not over that) and even then you should probably start out with CardioWww@Answer-Health@Com

Whats wrong with being short!?

Also I've never heard this before!. It seems to me that as long as you eat right along with lifting you should be fine!. They are probably just trying to make excuses for themselves to not work out!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Sounds like rubbish to me!.

You probably want to not try to lift too much at your age, as your joints are still growing a developing - but there is no evidence as far as i know that suggests you wont grow!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

yes, it's OK!.

eat well and take multivitamins and you'll regain the calories lost from exercising!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

nope!. some say it will stunt your growth!. its better when your a bit older, you can lift some wieghts sporaticaly, but not like everyday for an hour!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

if you lift too much weight it will shift your growth plates and you will not grow start off with a small weight then increaseWww@Answer-Health@Com

You can lift weights, the people who told you that little bit of tripe, need to go back to school!. Good luck!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Stop lifting because it can stunt your growth by making your muscles that are still developing all weird and over worked!. You need to focus on growing at your age or u might be 5'3'' forever!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Well, I don't know if that's true!.
But yeah, I'd say that's fine if a 13 year old lifts weights!. I don't think there should really be an age restriction for them!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i lift weighs and i havent stopped growing and the guys at my scool are 14-15 and HAVE to lift weights evry day cause or football so i think its ok GOOGLE it!Www@Answer-Health@Com

kinda yes but kinda know you will still grow but not as much im 5'8 and ive been liftin weights eversince i was 12 years old im 15 i can lift 180Www@Answer-Health@Com

no it's not true!. if you can lift that much without hurting or straining your muscles then good for you! lifting weights has nothing to do with how tall you growWww@Answer-Health@Com

You'll stop growing!. At least I did!. You're only 5'3, so stop working out and try and get as tall as possible first!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

yup, just remember to stretch and dont overdue it and hurt yourself!.

and you will still grow, thats silly!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

you shouldn't really start lifting weights until you're 16Www@Answer-Health@Com

NO! tht aint true

but my brother is 14 almost 15 he is shorter then u and can lift alot he has the same problem as my dad !! just give it time youll grow =]Www@Answer-Health@Com
