I would skip any caffienated beverages and opt for water!. The caffiene may cause you to lose more fluids and set you up for dehydration, thus giving you an initial boost at the start of the race, but as you go, the effects of not having adequate fluid will cause you to slow down!.
Have a carbohydrate loaded meal, and get your energy for the race from that!. Leave the caffienated beverages alone and drink plain water!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Despite considerable research in this area, the role of caffeine as a performance enhancing drug is still controversial!. Some of the data are conflicting, which is in part due to how the experimental studies were designed and what methods were used!. However, there is general agreement in a few areas:
1!. Caffeine does not appear to benefit short term, high intensity exercise (eg!. sprinting)
2!. Caffeine can enhance performance in endurance sports!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Caffeine is a stimulant, which can always help!. However, it can also cause problems if you overdo it!.
I have found!. personally!. on race days (mountain bike) that it is best if I stick to my usual intake and timing of caffeine!. If I overdo it, I get edgy and my reflexes and timing are off!. For me!. on my mountain bike this usually means crashing into a tree or falling off a rock!.
If I stay away from it altogether on race days I feel foggy!.
Just my own experience, hope it helps!.
