Exercise is the best way. Whether its running, playing a sport, or walking around someplace, any amount of exercise helps. Also, eating healthy (or healthier) foods boosts the effectiveness of the exercises you are doing. Remember it is no going to happen overnight, you need to be patient and be consistent with your workouts and diet.
If you want to go on a diet, all you need to do is make sure that you don't eat any junk food. Eat food like mostly fruits and vegetables. NEVER EAT FOODS WITH TRANS FAT!!!
Also you need to make sure you work out more. If you work out every day of the week, only do strength training every other day.
NOTE: Always remember that if you are on a diet, don't make it too hard and then it can be permanent. Then you'll get used to your "diet" and you'll be skinny all the time
