How does the entire proccess of getting a retainer go about?!
Question:
How does the entire proccess of getting a retainer go about?
They take off your braces and make a mold of your newly aligned, fabulous teeth. Then, they make a retainer?
But how long do you wait for the retainer? Wouldn't your teeth start shifting while waiting?
Cause I just went for my dental yesterday, and the doctor said that if there's nothing I want to change, I can get retainers, and I want to get the braces off ASAP. Can I just call him and tell him that I want the retainers and go down to make a mold?
Answers:
It depends on what your orthodontist does and how he was trained but it goes when I did it:
1st, take off your braces
2nd, clean your teeth
3rd, take an impression
now here is where what I think the ortho's I worked for are different than most - we would make clear plastic 'invisalign' type of retainer to give the patient that day.
another mold was taken that day and a standard wire retainer was made a given to the patient several days later
I don't think most orthodontists give a clear plastic retainer that day, they just give you a wire one in a few days or in a week.
Your teeth actually can move between when you get your braces of and when you get your retainer, but usually your teeth are stable enough that there isn't enough movement to worry about - they won't get crooked in again in just a few days.
Congrats - getting your braces off is one of the best feelings in the world.
