Sore throat?!

Question:

Sore throat?

Can a dentist diagnose strep throat?
Has anyone seen a dentist and he found strep throat? I am having a sore throat post tooth extraction and am currently taking an antibiotic. The back of my tongue feels like there are cuts on them, I cant wear my dentures because my gums are so sore. The reason Im asking is because I have a dental appointment today and the DDS prescribed the antibiotic. I also developed a facial rash while on another antibiotic and my regular MD switched me to another one. Should I bring my problem to my dentist or go back to my MD?

Answers:

Since you have a dental appointment today, you should make your dentist aware of this problem. He will advise you about the medication and examine you for these "abrasions" on your tongue. As for strep, no this would require a culture to be sent to a lab for a definite diagnosis of strep throat, although he can tell you if he thinks it is from an exam. But since you are on antibiotics, it's highly unlikely that you have strep. Although, after checking your throat, he may possibly change your antibiotics if he feels it's necessary to treat both conditions but may advise you to see your physician as well. Be sure to discuss this with your dentist today, I'm sure he will be able to help you. Good luck and hope you feel better soon.
