Did anyone when having a retainer after braces; the retainer had a bad stench to!

Question:

Did anyone when having a retainer after braces; the retainer had a bad stench to it?

IS THERE ANYWAY AT ALL TO GET THE SMELL TO GO AWAY!?!?!?!?

Answers:

The best way to rid the smell is to keep the retainer and your mouth exceptionally clean.

When you take it out to eat, and then put it right back in "with out" brushing your teeth it transfers the food particles to the retainer just as eating does to your teeth. So it just harbors the plaque causing residue to build up (and smell) on the retainer.

The best way to do this is "whenever" you take it out rinse it well or brush it if you can, then brush your teeth or rinse really well before you place it back in. At the very least, once a day be sure to brush it well and soak it in either Listerine, a denture cleanser or retainer cleanser. You can purchase the retainer cleanser at the drug store (denture cleanser works just as well) or ask your dentist/ortho for a sample. You can stop by your dentist office and ask them to drop it in their cleansing solution and run it through their ultrasonic machine to get the build up off. Just remember it's what's in your mouth that's causing the retainer to build up plaque and have this odor. Keep your mouth and your retainer as clean as you possibly can! Good luck and hope I've been of some help.

Additional information: NEVER soak it in Clorox Bleach. Also your dentist probably won't charge to clean it, just call and ask when it's convenient for you to drop it by and if you can wait for it.
