Decadron after wisdom teeth extraction?!
Question:
Decadron after wisdom teeth extraction?
Hello... I had all four wisdom teeth pulled a couple of days ago. My mother was my chauffeur after the surgery and responsible for my medications. She didn't want me on too much medications and now I have a lot of swelling. I've taken the amoxicillin and Ibuprofen 600 regularly, but I just found a packet of Decadron .75 mg that she hid from me. Apparently, according to the package, I was supposed to take it the day of the surgery and the next day for swelling. Can I still take it to reduce my swelling or am I screwed, for lack of a better word.

My mother has no medical qualifications...and I'm really irritated by this. But if I can still take the Decadon, I will.
Answers:
Decadron (dexamethasone) is a steroidal anti-inflammatory and should still be able to help reduce swelling if you are experiencing it. It is a very potent anti-inflammatory and has no abuse potential. If taken earlier it would have prevented a lot of the swelling and pain you are experiencing now and by holding it you have been forced to experience much more pain.
Talk to your mother because unless she has a medical degree and is approved by the medical board in your state to practice medicine she should not be making therapy decisions that go against what your dentist/doctor decides.
