How longs does it take for the antibiotics to kick in and the swelling of your c!

Question: I have an infected tooth and I have been taking antibiotics for since Wednesday afternoon. I have an appointment with an oral surgeon on Monday to have the tooth removed. I want to know if I should expect the swelling to subside. I have read I should expect swelling after the extraction. Is that also true?

Well lets see my husband had an abscessed tooth and he started antibiotic last Friday and it was Wednesday before the swelling went down in his cheek, I know every one reacts differently to meds but we were actually surprised it took that long. Now as for the chance of swelling after an extraction I have never experienced swelling, but I have experienced dry socket where the blood clot that forms in the gum to protect the area comes out some how and it painful, be sure to keep the gauze in place for a good amount of time and let that clot form. You will be glad you did, actually that is one of the most painful experiences I have had its right up there with child birth LOL.

yes swelling can occure from having a tooth removed. I did when my wisdom teeth were pulled, my cheeks were swollen for about a week.

It usually takes 3 days to kick in. Dry ice packs on your cheeks. Take Advil or Aleve for swelling & pain.
You can try gargling with warm salt water...swish around infected tooth. This will help it drain & help swelling.

Yes you will have swelling after the extraction. Ask DDS what you should do post-extraction.

Hope you feel better soon.

Sometimes the abscess will not go away until the tooth is gone.I had seven teeth removed on Tuesday and one of them was badly abscessed.I was on antibiotics for eight days before the surgery and it didn't phase the infection. The swelling after the surgery is minor. The pain is nothing compared to the abscess. You won't feel like doing much for a couple of days afterward.Good luck.
