You're more likely to know that you have it from the sheer intensity of pain, than by examining your teeth (particularly if it was an intense extraction, your jaw may not even be able to open enough for you to examine your teeth)
If your pain gets very intense then talk to your dentist and they can sometimes pack it with extra dressing and things. Otherwise just make sure you follow all the aftercare procedures, avoid drinking through straws or smoking, etc.
