Why do I shake after getting Novocaine?!


Question: after i get novocaine for dental work it gives me the shakes every time. I want to know if this is dangerous ?

The "novocaine" has something in it called epinephrine, which is natural adrenaline. This gives patients many different reactions, like your shaking. Some people are actually allergic to it. You should mention it to your dentist next time. If it makes you really uncomfortable s/he can use an anesthetic (novacaine) without epinephrine.

The epinepherine in local anesthetics can cause heart palpitations and 'the shakes' as side effects.... it's also used to prolong the effect of the anesthetic.

Ask to have an anesthetic without epi the next time you need to get numb... common ones are Carbocaine and Polocaine. In addition to not getting 'the shakes', you won't be numb as long, either!
