Can the dentist tell if you smoke?!

Question: Can the dentist tell if you smoke? I have been smoking for 5 years and my dentist has never said anything, but I am just curious.... I have really good teeth and haven't had cavaties since I was in high school... I am paranoid about telling my dentist because I don't want my insurance company to find out and have it bite me in the butt later down the road...all answers appreciated!

Yes, he can tell that you smoke. No, he won't tell your insurance company. Yes, you ought to tell your insurance company yourself because if/when you get a smoking related disease they will likely find out then and you will be screwed. Or better yet just stop smoking.

Edit: From your question it sounded like you had lied to your insurance company. If they don't ask there is no reason to tell.

Your dentist hasn't mentioned it because, well, why would he? He probably sees tons of smokers so it isn't particularly noteworthy. Now if your teeth were messed up from doing meth then he might have something worth inquiring about.

Yes, your dentist can tell if you smoke. You may not realize it, but generally your breath is bad and your teeth are yellow.

Yes, the Dr. does know. They can tell that there is a little discolor in your teeth and also, all people who smoke you can smell it. No matter if they think that they are covering it up, people can still smell it.

yes becuz if ur teeth are yellow

Anyone can tell if you smoke. Whether you realize it or not - you stink of smoke, clothes, hair, seeping out of your pores, etc.

Anytime someone that smokes gets near me, I can smell it.

He knows. Your teeth are going to be stained a little bit from the smoke. Also, just by the smell of your clothes if your dentist is a non smoker.

yes as the smoke leaves crap on the teeth. nicotene. talk to the dentist and see if this will affect your insurance rates if he puts that in his notes.

usually, yes.

Yes, he could tell during your first visit after you started smoking. Better own up to your insurance. There is no one who knows you that doesn't know. The smell surrounding you, your clothes, your house, etc is obvious to anyone coming near you

Yes, they can tell by your tongue, any redness in the throat, and the teeth themselves, as well as the smell of smoking.

dentists can always tell, just like they can tell that i'm a coffee drinker and that my mom drinks a lot of tea. i don't see what affect it would have on your insurance..

Not to be overly critical, but everyone can tell if you smoke.
From your clothes to your hair & breath, it's near impossible to mask.

I think eventully he can tell by either your teeth or breath. [not that you have bad breath]

Medical records are confidential, and that includes dental records. Your dentist (or doctor for that matter) is not going to go tell the insurance company.

I doubt the tobacco use would make a difference to your dental rates.

However, it's obviously dishonest to insure yourself as a non-tobacco user when you are. I'd encourage you to be honest now if you haven't been - then you never have to look over your shoulder and worry.

Yes he can tell. Not only by your teeth, but your gums as well. I worked in a dental office and they don't disclose to the insurance company if a patient is a smoker.
