A dentist did a partial root canal, but now the tooth shaped has changed is this!

Question:

A dentist did a partial root canal, but now the tooth shaped has changed is this right?

i had a different dentist do another tooth and it stayed the same minus the inner infected part of the tooth. With this second tooth the dentist drilled down the side of the tooth that isn't shown to ppl when I smile, and he slightly changed the shape of the outer part that shows. I'm upset over this, because when i have to get a crown the tooth is definately shorter and i'm not sure if they will fix it. what should i do? is everything okay?

Answers:

The dentist grinded down the biting surface of that tooth so it won't touch the opposing tooth for the duration of the root canal therapy. This is standard practice when doing a root canal, to lessen the chance that you will feel sensitivity on biting.

This will be restored into contact again when the porcelain crown is put onto the tooth after the root canal treatment is complete.

A tooth needs to be reduced by about 2 to 2.5mm anyway to make room for the porcelain crown-- Porcelain requires a certain thickness so that it won't crack when you bite down on it.

Hope this helps.
