Are these cavities?!

Question:

Are these cavities?

Today, one of my teeth started to hurt. So I took my mirror (I have one of those little dental mirrors) and looked at the tooth, and I noticed a small black spot on it.
I decided also tp check the rest of my teeth, and I noticed that all my back teeth, top and bottom have black marks on the biting surface and some of the teeth also have black lines.

They don't hurt (only the tooth which hurt today) And I take very good care of my teeth of my teeth!

Are these cavities?
Because if they are, they're in basically ALL of my teeth!!!

Answers:

As a dental hygienist I would say that although you may have some cavities it sounds more like you have some staining in the pits and grooves of your teeth. This isn't uncommon at all, many of my patients have it and it is due to the things we drink and eat. I would recommend that you have a dental cleaning and xrays to check for cavities if you haven't had an appointment in the recent past. The reason for this is that cavities start small and if untreated will grow larger pretty quickly. If you think of a cavity on the chewing surface of the tooth as the top of a triangle you can expect that the cavity you can't see would be broader and wider like the bottom of the triangle inside the tooth. If you fix the cavity when it is small you are a lot less likely to need a root canal or crown on your tooth as a result, and these 2 procedures are time consuming and costly. Remember the health of your mouth is directly related to the health of your body! Good luck
