Lip not functioning properly after novacaine?!

Question:

Lip not functioning properly after novacaine?

I had a tooth filled today (upper right) and the novacaine is wearing off, but the right half of my top lip isn't moving like it normally does!! It's still a little tingly, but I've had novacaine before and this never happened. It usually just feels weird, but looks and moves normally. I am really freaked out that something is wrong. Has this ever happened to anyone? Also, right after I got the injection he informed me that this is really strong and just became legal in the US. Anyone in dental school know what's happening? I got the injection 5 hours ago.

Answers:

There is a type of dental anesthetic that lasts up to 12 hrs. I believe it has been around though for a while...I think it is called Marvocaine, or something similar to that. We just got it in our clinic. But we will only use it for extractions or very long in depth procedures (like full arch treatment). Typically dentists use Lidocaine on upper teeth, and that doesn't usually last more than a few hours, but it depends greatly on your dosage, and physical stats. If you are small, you (typically) require less, if you are large (typically) require more. If you are sensitive to dental anesthetics, it may last longer than usual compared to the average population. I did have ONE patient that had numbness for about two weeks, but that was an abnormal case. Just keep an eye on it, and maybe take some Motrin. IF you still do not have sensation in the area after 24 hrs. you need to call your dentist immediately. So they can determine what happened. Best of luck to you!
