Anyone ever have the dentist hit a nerve when having the anesthesia injected in !

Question: is this somewhat common? or should I find a new dentist. It was excruciating!

Answers: is this somewhat common? or should I find a new dentist. It was excruciating!

I have hit the mandibular nerve many times over the past 35 years. It is an unfortunate thing that happens occasionally.
The difficulty is that the nerve is about 3/4 inch deep and in an awkward place to get at. You don't want to hit the nerve but if the anaesthetic solution is not placed close enough to the nerve then it will not work or will work inadequately.
The other big problem is that everybody is built a little differently. So you feel the landmarks, line up the needle and go in carefully. Most times it works very well, sometimes the nerve is touched causing an electric shock sort of feeling. It is not very nice, but the dentist really cannot help it, no matter how careful s/he is.
Your dentist did nothing wrong. It is just something that occasionally happens to even the best dentist

It happens. I had it a couple of times and it's not nice, but the pain lasts only a very short time.

it hurt a lot but only lasts for a moment or two til the Novocaine kicks in

my dentist did this and my mouth and jaw was numb through the whole healing process. so it actually worked out for me. feeling came back in about two weeks.

only for a short while
