What would you suggest as a way to numb the pain?

There usually is a little discomfort when wisdom teeth are coming in but it shouldn't be painful. I'm a little concerned that there might be crowding are problems with the positioning of the tooth. Tylenol or Ibuprofen can help with your discomfort, if you are not allergic to these medicines. Ibuprofen is the best if you have any swelling since it is an anti-inflammatory. Your best bet is to check with your dentist and make sure everything is going o.k. with your teeth.
